Side Stitches

Now that I am getting a little faster, I guess my body is working harder.  Now I have been getting side stitches on my right side just under my rib cage about 4 miles into my runs. It’s pretty painful and sometimes causes me to stop and catch my breath Yell

After a little research it seems to be a fairly commong thing and probably related to my breathing patterns.  Apparently the ligaments attached to your liver extend from the motion of running and incorrect breathing.  That’s what causes the pain.  The most common cause I found online is exhaling when the right foot hits the ground.  I checked my form on my next run and sure enough… I was exhaling when my right foot was hitting the ground.

So I altered my breathing pattern to exhale when my left foot hit the ground.  That also happens to be the same time when my right elbow is all the way back.  I found it easier to concentrate on my arms then my legs.  It’s a work in progress, but it seems to be helping.
